July 2014 SBA Region 4 News To Share Brought to you by the U.S. Small Business Administration's Region IV Office Cassius Butts Regional Administrator U.S. Small Business Administration The SBA Region 4 Team Has Plans For YOU I had the pleasure of joining the SBA management team from across Region 4 along with all of SBA management from across this great Nation in Cleveland, Ohio this month.  Our main objective was to strategize the next moves of our agency moving forward.  The theme for the conference this year was "District Based Economic Development Within a National Perspective."  The theme sits well with me as we truly embraced district successes and tied in SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet's national strategies that she has asked us to put in place to better serve our small business communities; especially the underserved communities.  The SBA has a lot in store for you and our team is prepared to communicate to you the new opportunities that are on the horizon.  One new concept I will introduce to you now is SBAOne. SBAOne is a new, interactive, user-friendly SBA lending platform. SBA is automating the uploading of documents and the generation of forms, and allowing electronic signatures saving banks hours of processing time and thousands of dollars. SBA One will incent more banks to partner with us, generating more loans and igniting economic activity. By making the process quicker, cheaper and more intuitive, this initiative will help existing lenders do more small-dollar lending.  I am very excited about this new development and where it can lead this agency and what it can bring our communities.   SBAOne is just one example of what we have in store for you.  So, stay tuned and stay aware.  The SBA has opportunities coming your way and an amazing team ready to assist in seamlessly implementing new policies and procedures that will lead to more small business success.     SBA district directors and deputy district directors from across the Southeast Region gathered in Cleveland, Ohio at the SBA National Management Conference to discuss future plans to drive small business success Congratulations To One Of Our Own Congratulations to James McClendon, Administrative Officer of the SBA Mississippi District Office.  James was presented his 20-year Federal Service pin and certificate by District Director Janita Stewart in recognition of his dedicated service to the federal government.  He is a Veteran and Purple Heart recipient and has been with the SBA for 17 years. Alabama District Office Tom Todt, SBA District Director Tom Todt, Alabama District Director, attended a day-long workforce conference on July 23. The conference, co-hosted by the Delta Regional Authority and the Washington County Economic Development Initiative, was attended by approximately 80, and featured a presentation of a Southern Growth Policies Board report Re-imagining Workforce Development. One of the chief take-aways is the realization that all workforce training and development efforts must begin with the specific skill needs as outlined by the industries. North Florida District Office Wilfredo J. Gonzalez, District Director  Regional Administrator Cassius Butts recently participated in a Business Opportunity Symposium hosted by the Black Business Investment Fund (BBIF) of Central Florida. The focus of the symposium was on loan opportunities for underserved business owners. Orange County Mayor Theresa Jacobs also participated in the symposium. The BBIF is one of North Florida's certified microlenders, and lends up to $50,000 to small businesses in certain counties. For more information on the microloan program in North Florida contact the District Office at (904) 443-1900. North Florida District Director, Wilfredo J. Gonzalez recently received the Founders Award from Latina Style Magazine for his continuous support of the magazine since its launch in the early 1990s. The award was presented at the Latina Style Business Series conference in Orlando in late May. The conference consisted of workshops on topics such as access to capital, healthy work environments, empowerment through technology, and key business lessons learned. South Florida District Office Francisco "Pancho" Marrero, District Director Assistant District Director Area 1 Althea Harris signed a Strategic Alliance Memorandum (SAM) with South Florida Minority Supplier Development Council on June 26.  This brings the district total to 27 SAMs, 12 of which have been signed this fiscal year.  Miami SCORE chapter and Florida SBDC are supporting SBA national initiative Boots to Business Reboot that will be held at the Miami Veterans Administration Hospital auditorium, July 29-30.  More than 110 veterans and spouses have already registered.  The district office will be supporting four Affordable Care Act presentations on July 21, 22, 28 and 29.  The presentations will target small and minority business owners in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.  Though enrollment is currently closed until the next open period in November, small business owners are still looking for information and a better understanding of how the new law is affecting small business owners.  Finally, public relations specialist and veteran business development specialist Jim Brooks will be speaking about SBA resources for veterans at a Veteran's Resource Fair sponsored by the Doral Chamber of Commerce on July 23.  City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and U.S. Congressman Joe Garcia will be part of the opening ceremonies.   Georgia District Office Terri Denison, District Director On August 19, the SBA Georgia District Office will be joining Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell and the U.S. General Services Administration for the 3rd annual Back To Business Conference at Atlanta City Hall.  This conference, which is free of charge, will offer opportunities for small businesses from around the metro area to network with potential government and private sector buyers and feature panels on entrepreneurship and the new Atlanta Falcons stadium project. SBA Regional Administrator Cassius Butts will be the keynote presenter at this year's event. Kentucky District Office Ralph Ross, District Director SBA Participating in Business Forum with FDIC in Kentucky The SBA Kentucky District Office, in conjunction with the FDIC and other business service providers, is participating in a Small Business Forum on July 30 and August 13 that targets financial institutions and community-based organizations serving the Appalachian region of eastern Kentucky. This first-of-its-kind event with the FDIC in Kentucky will include a series of presentations and panel discussions by FDIC and SBA personnel as well as representatives from the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, the USDA and several SBA microlenders located in eastern Kentucky.     Appalachia is in dire need of alternative work environments beyond the cyclical coal mining and service industries. In addition to dwindling population, challenges to business development in the Appalachian region include low educational attainment, mountainous typography, and limited transportation routes and access. While barriers do exist, there is a renewed focus by the Kentucky Governor's Office and the federal Promise Zone award to concentrate efforts on Appalachian needs. Industries such as arts and crafts, tourism and manufacturing are being highlighted as possible revenue generators in the region.  This forum serves to meet the following objectives: Foster idea-sharing about strategies to create prospective small businesses in Appalachia using specific federal programs; Assess ways to maximize government-community-financial institution partnerships to work successfully in  Appalachian communities to facilitate small business lending and growth; Provide financial institutions with new or a renewed list of community contacts; and, Identify key stakeholder groups that help build the region through programming and future planning efforts. Mississippi District Office Janita Stewart, District Director Mississippi District Director Janita R. Stewart was one of several speakers who helped kick-off the "Power Forward Business, Supplier and Contractor Expo" held Thursday, June 19th at the Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg, MS.  The event was sponsored by the Mississippi Power Company and hosted by the Mississippi Enterprise for Technology, Strategic Systems, Inc. (SSI) and the South Mississippi Procurement Technical Assistance Center. The event provided opportunities for young entrepreneurs and seasoned small business owners to learn of SBA's highly touted programs and services.  Attendees also used the forum to meet and build relationships with other federal, state and commercial procurement specialists, state agency representatives and lenders.  SBA personnel Gary Reed, DDD; Alice Doss, SBOS; Rhonda Fisher, SLRS; and Lance Foster, Gulfport Branch Manager also participated in the event.  Other participants included Johnny DuPree, Mayor of the City of Hattiesburg, and Mike Espy, former U.S. House of Representative, who was the first African American selected as Secretary of Agriculture during Bill Clinton's presidency.  Donna Brazile, special guest speaker, author, syndicated columnist and television political commentator provided the 300+ in attendance sage advice on entrepreneurship given she was 12 years old when she started a business. Janita Stewart, MS District Director addresses the audience of the "Power Forward Business, Supplier and Contractor Expo"       North Carolina District Office Lynn Douthett, District Director Mike Arriola was appointed Deputy District Director of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) North Carolina District Office on July 13, 2014. As Deputy District Director, Arriola supports the District Director in supervising the office's administrative operations and in carrying out the agency's mission of providing financial assistance, counseling, and management and technical assistance to small businesses in North Carolina. Mike has been with the SBA since January 1998, when he joined the Guam Branch Office as a loan specialist and held numerous collateral duties, including Public Information Officer. In February 2004, Arriola accepted a position with the SBA North Carolina District to open a satellite office in the city of Asheville and was responsible for delivering the agency's programs and services to small businesses in the 28 westernmost counties of the state. On July 13, 2014, he was named Deputy District Director. A business and corporate banker by training, Arriola has worked for various banks, including Chase Manhattan, Bank of Hawaii and HSBC. He is a 1984 graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and a 1992 graduate of the Asian Institute of Management's Advanced Bank Management Program. In 2010, Arriola completed his Master's degree in Public Affairs from Western Carolina University and was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Gamma Mu Honor Societies. Mike Arriola was appointed Deputy District Director of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) North Carolina District Office on July 13, 2014. South Carolina District Office  Elliott Cooper, District Director The South Carolina District Office is pleased to announce that Michael Corp has been promoted to Lead Business Opportunity Specialist. As the new business opportunity division head, Mr. Corp will lead our office's government contracting programs and outreach. "We are fortunate to have someone of Mr. Corp's skills and experience to fill this important position," said District Director Elliott Cooper. Mr. Corp, an Air Force veteran, joined our staff in 2010 as a business development specialist. Previously, he was team leader for all construction contracts at Shaw Air Force Base.   Tennessee District Office Walter Perry, District Director A new member of the Tennessee SBA team, LaTanya Channel, joined the SBA Tennessee District Office as Deputy District Director on July 7th.   La Tanya comes to the TN District Office from SBA Headquarters where she was Chief of Certification and Eligibility for the Office  of Small Disadvantaged Business and HUBZone and Certification and Eligibility, and formerly a Senior Advisor for the 8(a) Business Development Program. On July 11th,  District Director Walter Perry and Deputy District Director LaTanya Channel presented the SBA Tennessee Micro Lender of the Year Award to Pathway Lending in Nashville. Pathway Lending, formerly Southeast Community Capital, has been an active Micro Lender statewide since 1999. On July 15th,  a Lenders' Training Event and luncheon, with over 60 bankers,  was presented at the Nashville Entrepreneur Center by Lender Relations Specialists Lisa Denson and Anna Maria Lloyd. District International Trade Officer, David Tiller, moderated a panel on International Trade Finance on July 17th in Memphis at the Made In America Rural International Trade Forum presented by the White House, the Department of Commerce International Trade Administration, Export-Import Bank,  the Tennessee Small Business Development Center, the Delta Regional Authority, and the SBA.  More than 150 interested entrepreneurs pre-registered for the event.  Regional International Trade Officer, Sandro Murtas, and Export Import Bank Regional Director, Susan Kintanar, David Spann of the DoC and international bankers are also scheduled to present at the Forum. On July 24th District Director Perry presented the Tennessee SBA Small Business Person of the Year Award to Tracy Solomon of TEVET LLC in Greeneville. Solomon is a service disabled Veteran who has developed his firm into a leading federal government contractor supplying advance testing and measuring equipment. The Tennessee District Office has continued to offer outreach events to present the Basics of HUBZone Certification and the SBA 8(a) Program across the state to chambers of commerce and non-profit organizations. June is Hurricane Preparedness Month, a time for small businesses and communities to assess their plans for how to react should a hurricane affect their areas.  And while not every community in our country may be hit by a hurricane, it's a good time for all communities, from California to Georgia to Alaska and every state in between to review or prepare a disaster preparedness plan—so that if the unexpected occurs, your small business is ready to take action. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 2011 and 2012 were the two most extreme years on record for destructive weather events, causing more than $170 billion in damages, much of that to businesses. Downtime in the aftermath of extreme weather events is costly—about $3,000 per day for small businesses, according to the Institute for Business and Home Safety. For small business owners, being prepared can mean staying in business following a disaster. Explore the resources that can help you develop an emergency preparedness and disaster relief plan at http://www.sba.gov/.  Now's a good time to build a disaster preparedness plan that will protect your organization, your clients and your bottom line in the event of a weather-related emergency. Here are a few tips to get you started: Determine your greatest risk potential.  It might come from wind damage or the inland flooding that typically follows the tropical storm's heavy rains.  Meanwhile, your business could suffer financial losses due to road and bridge closings in the aftermath of a hurricane.  Power outages are a major threat, especially to businesses in the food and hospitality industries. What would happen if you had to shut down your business for several days?  Look at the building where you do business—inside and out—and assess the risks. If you do this early enough, you'll have time to do structural upgrades—like impact resistant doors and windows—that can prevent possible future storm damage. Review your insurance coverage.  Make sure you understand what's covered, and if you need flood insurance. Check into business interruption insurance, which helps you cover operating expenses if you're forced to temporarily close the business. Calculate the cost of business interruptions for a day, one week, a month or six months.  Build a cash reserve that will allow your company to function during the recovery phase. Prepare your supply chain.  Develop professional relationships with alternate vendors, in case your primary supplier isn't available. Place occasional orders with them so they'll regard you as an active customer. Create a contact list for important business contractors and vendors you plan to use in an emergency.  Keep this list with other documents filed at an easily accessible place, and also at a protected off-site location. Create a crisis communications plan. Make sure your staff, customers, vendors, contractors—everyone you do business with—know what's going on in the aftermath of a disaster. Establish an email alert system, keeping primary and secondary email addresses for your employees, vendors and customers. Provide real-time updates to the community so they know you're still in business and in the process of rebuilding after the disaster. And don't forget to test your plan. Alabama District Office Tom Todt, SBA District Director John Spears, SBA Director of Clusters and Skills Initiatives, was in Huntsville AL June 11 and 12 to participate in a press conference, among other activities. The press conference was to announce the novation of a scientific clusters contract from the Von Braun Center for Science and Innovation, to the Women's Business Center of North Alabama, a long-time SBA Resource Partner. The cluster initiative, previously known as the Huntsville Advanced Defense Technology Cluster Initiative or HADTCI, was re-branded TechRich for Technology Regional Innovation Cluster Huntsville. While in Huntsville, Mr. Spears also visited small technology clients of the Cluster, met with RichTech directors, and toured Redstone Arsenal, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Cummins Research Park and the US Space and Rocket Center, as well as conducting a 6 am radio interview, sampling southern cuisine and enjoying southern hospitality. The Business Development team provided training and updates about the program, and also provided one on one counseling to businesses looking to get started with 8(a) certification. Cassius Butts, SBA Regional Administrator, also participated in the conference, and spoke to the audience of over 175 attendees including small business owners, aspiring entrepreneurs, and state and federal government agencies about the importance of the 8(a) Business Development program. Wasserman-Schultz.  Receiving awards were:  Ricky Brantley, President of Viking Defense, the South Florida District 2014 Small Business Person of the Year;  Patricia Bonilla, President of Luncacon Construction Group, the South Florida District 2014 Minority Owned Small Business Person of the Year and the SBA State of Florida Minority Owned Small Business Person of the Year; Elizabeth Karwowski, President of Get Credit Healthy, the South Florida District 2014 Small Business Financial Services Advocate of the Year; Daniel Bittner and Maxim Weitzman, owners of Concept II, the South Florida District 2014 Small Business Exporter of the Year; and Broward SCORE, the South Florida District 2014 Small Business Media Advocate of the Year and the SBA State of Florida Small Business Media Advocate of the Year. Miami was selected as one of 10 locations for SBA's national Boots to Business REBOOT program.  Modeled after Boots to Business, the two-day workshop targets military veterans who want to start their own business but left service before the current program for transitioning servicemembers was launched.  SBA South Florida is working with the Miami VA Hospital to host the workshop in their auditorium on July 29-30.  Miami-area winners of the SBA South Florida District Office National Small Business Week awards were recognized at a Small Business Workshop hosted by U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Kentucky District Office Ralph Ross, District Director Linda George Retiring from Kentucky District Office We send our best to Linda George, District Counsel for the SBA Kentucky District Office, who is retiring this month. She is bidding a fond farewell after 27 years of government service. Linda started her career as an advertising copywriter after graduating from the University of Kentucky in 1975 with an English Degree and obtained her Law Degree (Juris Doctorate) in 1982. Linda began her federal career at the Corps of Engineers in 1987 and joined SBA four years later as District Counsel. She also has been an Adjunct Professor at Sullivan University in Louisville since the late 1980s, teaching legal and business topics. She created the first undergraduate and graduate classes in alternative dispute resolution and plans to continue teaching at Sullivan. Linda has also been a practicing mediator since 1994, and she focuses predominantly on workplace conflict. Linda enjoys painting and writing poetry. She used to play the drums and will now have time to practice that skill as well as hone her golf game and work in her garden. Her daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter live 70 miles away in Lexington, KY, and a second grandchild is expected soon, so Linda looks forward to spoiling the grandchildren and escaping back home before their parents know what happened. Linda has always been willing to share her knowledge, pleadings and skills with her fellow counsel and district office team members, and SBA has benefitted from her negotiation and litigation skills. We will miss her dearly but are glad that she can now enjoy her well-deserved retirement.   Linda George has been a tremendous asset to the Southeast Region and the entire Agency.  She will be very missed.  We wish Linda well in her adventures into retirement! Mississippi District Office Janita Stewart, District Director The Mississippi SBA District Office held its 2014 Statewide Lenders Conference at the Imperial Palace Resort in Biloxi, MS on May 22nd & 23rd.  Janita R. Stewart, Mississippi SBA Director, was joined by Region IV Administrator Cassius Butts, local mayors and representatives from the local SBDC, SCORE and Women's Business Center during the event.  Special thanks to Frank Pucci, Sandy Franzago, Paul Santomauro, Victor M. Dr. Derek Greenfield, internationally renowned motivational speaker, electrified the audience with his high energy and positive message during his keynote speech.  Certificates of appreciation and special recognition were given to Mississippi top lenders and Certified Development Companies.  The event, co-sponsored by the Central Mississippi Development Company, helped train more than 90 attendees. The SBA North Carolina District Office staff is assertive in its outreach of SBA export programs and resources to assist lenders and small businesses. Since March, district staff has trained over 30 North Carolina lenders on SBA Export Finance programs including: ·       The Export Express Loan Program offers streamlined financing up to $500,000. It is the simplest export loan product offered by the SBA. Any business in operation at least one year that can demonstrate that the loan proceeds will support its export activity is eligible.    ·       The Export Working Capital Program offers financing up to $5 million as a credit enhancement. ·       International Trade Loan Program offers loan financing for fixed assets and working capital to businesses that plan to start or continue exporting, or that have been adversely affected by competition from imports. SBA staff participates in a variety of export events around the state that help small businesses identify and access different global markets and export opportunities. Export University classes are held throughout North Carolina and offer topics such as:  Introduction to Exporting, Export Finance, and Licensing and Regulations. This year's major exporting event is DISCOVER GLOBAL MARKETS.  The U.S. Commercial Service and the North Carolina District Export Council are hosting this conference in Charlotte on October 29-31, 2014 at the Westin Charlotte Hotel. Tennessee District Office Walter Perry, District Director The Tennessee District Office has been busy preparing for the upcoming Fifth Annual Procurement Summit in Nashville, being presented on Wednesday, June 18th.  More than 175 persons pre-registered for the stellar event which draws federal agencies such as the U.S. Air Force, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Army Corps of Engineers to the annual event, providing invaluable opportunities to small business contractors.  The month of June also included SBA loan workshops presented by Jacqueline Merritt in Chattanooga and Murfreesboro. Government contracting seminars were presented by Gloria Armstead in Knoxville, Oak Ridge, and Chattanooga, and Kena Dixon presented a government contracting workshop in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs at the District Office during week of June 9th.  David Tiller appeared on WFSK radio, an HBCU station, on June 5th and June 12th to promote the Procurement Summit and SBA loan programs and services.  District Director Perry and David Tiller presented SBA Disaster Loan information in Fayetteville at a community meeting attended by 102 disaster survivors after three tornadoes swept through Lincoln County in late April.  Later this month, SBA will be presenting federal procurement information at Congressman Steve Cohen's Procurement Fair in Memphis on June 30.
