SBA's Growth Accelerator Fund Competition:

Growth Accelerator Fund Competition Deadline is June 3, 2016!  For the third year, SBA has launched the Growth Accelerator Fund competition for accelerators and other entrepreneurial ecosystem models to compete for prizes of $50,000 each, with a total of $3.95 million.  The application period is now through June 3. Information about the application process can be found at: www.sba.gov/accelerators or www.challenge.gov

SBA is partnering with several other federal agencies this year; National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Education (DoED) and Department of Agriculture (USDA) to provide additional prizes to accelerators that assist entrepreneurs with submitting proposals for the Small Business Innovation (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs.  SBA's Office of Investment and Innovation, with support from the Office of International Trade, is also partnering with the Inter-American Development Bank to provide prizes to U.S. accelerators that assist the African descendant start-up community in Latin America and the Caribbean.  Special consideration will be given to these accelerator models which support women-owned or minority-owned small businesses.

Several panels containing expert judges from the private and public sector with collective experience in early stage investing, entrepreneurship, academia, start-ups and economic development will select the winners.  The competition includes accelerators, incubators, co-working startup communities, shared tinker-spaces or other models.  The panel will give particular attention to applicants that fill geographic gaps in the accelerator and entrepreneurial ecosystem space.

Through this competition, the SBA is looking to support the development of accelerators and their support of startups in parts of the country where there are fewer conventional sources of access to capital (i.e., venture capital and other investors).

Please click here for the Growth Accelerator Fund Fact Sheet and specifics on how to apply and the timeline for 2016's competition.

Kentucky CEO among 2016 National Small Business Person of the Year honorees- Flavorman founder and CEO David Dafoe of Kentucky was among U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) honorees for 2016 National Small Business Person of the Year awards. Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet made the announcement May 2 in a ceremony in Washington, D.C. where Dafoe earned third runner-up. Dafoe was named Kentucky's Small Business Person of the Year in April, moving him on to this national award. His business, Flavorman, utilized three SBA loans to grow and relocate near downtown Louisville, kick starting a revitalization of the area. He was among regional winners from 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

"You don't get to this point in a company without the best people working beside you," said Dafoe. "And in Flavorman's case, it couldn't be more true."

Dafoe founded Pro-Liquitech International in 1992 after being employed at Brown-Forman Beverage Company, where he developed highly successful new products. Pro-Liquitech evolved into Flavorman, an international custom beverage production company. Its impressive client list includes internationally known brands and some of the world's largest distilleries. In 2012, David founded Flavorman's sister company, Distilled Spirits Epicenter, on the Flavorman campus. Distilled Spirits Epicenter is made up of three distinct and collaborative parts: Moonshine University, Grease Monkey Distillery and Challenge Bottling. Flavorman and Distilled Spirits Epicenter currently have 30 full time and four part-time employees.

Honorees included, "small business owners who represent the best of the best and showcase daily their entrepreneurial spirit and what it takes to be successful in today's evolving and competitive business environment," according to Sweet. The national overall winner was #WHO# of #WHERE#.
